Chapter Ten

Mr. Teeth dropped by on my next night off, no Ira in tow. I’d come downstairs at the buzzer’s summons and been surprised to see my waiting guest.

He glowered at me as I held the door open for him to enter. “Nice,” he muttered.

No, but it offered safety from the other tenants. Not a lot of places under three thousand did that.

“Where is your boss?” I asked, opening the apartment door. Luckily, both Abby and Devon had already left for work. Otherwise I doubted it would have gone well.

“Waiting for you to come act as escort. Plan to invite me inside?” He glowered at me, impatiently waiting for the invite he seemed to think I’d throw his way. It was tempting to keep him waiting out there in our dark stairwell, but I figured it would be cruel to scare my neighbours. Large, growly vampires in dark well-pressed suits were not our usual fare here. The mosquitoes who flew through our musty-smelling halls were more the bottom-tier type.

“Come on in, Teeth. Don’t chew on the furniture.”

Mr. Teeth twitched and his lip lifted in a side sneer. “Ira has terrible taste,” he lamented. “I never would’ve guessed that fact until he stumbled across you.”

Cold. Especially since, on the tail of that insult, he walked right in and plunked his ass on my futon. Ew. I slept there.

“Not from a mirror?” I called back, stalking after him.

“He doesn’t want me on his lap,” he said in return, tone mocking.

Ugh. No, thank God. That image wasn’t needed. However, if he made it that easy…

“No Daddy-mosquito issues?”

A huff. Teeth almost sounded amused. “Not Daddy. You’d call him my great-grandfather, actually.”

I hadn’t expected that. I stared, my mind trying to pick up the pattern of our back and forth. Bale full-on smirked now, the look completely transforming his dark-brown face. Gone was the menacing monster, and in its place sat a man I could call handsome.

“I’m sure he mentioned his Athene? She sired her lover, who in turn sired me a little over two centuries ago.”

Huh. Turns out I’d been right when I guessed he was on the youngish side of the vampire life cycle.

“And you left?” I asked, interested despite myself. It was rare for any vampire to answer questions directly. “Do you regret leaving them? Miss them?”

Teeth gave me a distasteful look. There went the moment of handsomeness and back came my growly invader. “No, thank you. I had enough of those two.”

I rather thought they might feel the same. “Is that why you came here?”

“I also brought word of the knife. Melitta—” He saw my confusion and snorted. “That’s the actual name of Ira’s daughter. She sent me to Ira, who then brought me here as his right-hand man.” So it was all a family thing, from learning about the blade to the relative being sent to help Ira straighten the mess out.

“Oh,” I managed. It all sounded so normal. Getting tired of others, moving for new experiences, growing wings and spreading them outside the parental home.
